Abstract

Many are aware of the physical health benefits conferred by exercise, but a lesser-known benefit of exercise is improvements in cognitive functioning, specifically memory. Exercise improves memory by increasing the size of the hippocampus, a seahorse-shaped structure located in both hemispheres of the brain responsible for memory. This essay dissects how exercise affects memory function and offers solutions to increase exercise participation in the population.
