Emotion-Focused Therapy: What the F is EFT?

Abstract

There has been a lot of research has been done into various methods of therapy in the last few decades. While this plethora of research is exciting, it poses a problem: how are individuals supposed to choose just one form of therapy from the dozens out there? Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) teaches clients how to identify, explore, and cope with their emotions. With the help of their therapist, clients are guided through the process of fully experiencing their emotion, learning to identify unhealthy (maladaptive) emotions, and transforming them into healthy (adaptive) emotions. These elements of EFT help to lessen the client’s emotional distress and resolve the problems that they were facing at the start of therapy.
