Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements of APA style, as outlined in the Author Guidelines. (https://guides.library.ualberta.ca/ld.php?content_id=35043857)
  • Cover page includes full name, program, year, university, and correspondence email address (of all contributors)
  • Figures require at least 1200 x 750 pixels to achieve the desired print-quality resolution of 300 ppi.

Submission Types:


Written:

  • Short Piece (Max. 500 words)
  • Long Piece (700 - 1250 words)
  • Opinion Piece
  • Newsletter
  • Poem


Format:

  • Microsoft Word Document (.docx)
  • Font: Times New Roman
  • Font size: 12 pt for body, 15 pt for heading
  • Cover page includes full name, program, year, university, and correspondence email address (of all contributors) 
  • One member must be from McMaster but the rest of the contributors can be from any university
  • Figures require at least 1200 x 750 pixels to achieve the desired print-quality resolution of 300 ppi.

Artistic

  • Visual Representations (drawing, painting)
  • Must be cited and address information
  • An Abstract of maximum 250 words that succinctly states a description of the piece and its relation to brain research or neuroscience, and original contribution.
  • Submission in .png format
  • Please do not use illustrations from articles or external sources as the main subject of your submission, this will be flagged as plagiarism

Is my topic appropriate?

  • As long as your submission is related to the brain, it will be considered for publication! If you have questions about your topic and if it is valid, please do not hesitate to contact us at brain@mcmaster.ca!

How long should my submission be?

  • Guidelines above; double spaced

What if I include external references in my submission?

  • If you are including external resources, we ask that it be cited in Vancouver using the Purdue Owl General Format here at the end of your submission
  • Your citations will not count towards your page/word count
  • If publishing primary research, students must require consent from the primary investigator

What is the deadline for submissions?

  • We will begin accepting Submissions on December 1, 2023
  • Submission deadline: January 30, 2024 11:59pm
