Abstract

Photonic crystal fibers have many attractive guiding properties which make them a viable alternative to conventional double cladding fibers for certain applications. The thermal and thermal-optical effects in these fibers are an important concern due to their unique structure and heat dissipation characteristics, specifically the thermal-optical effect on the refractive index is of special interest. In this article, three different designs for photonic crystal fibers being used for similar purposes are reviewed. A maximum refractive index change of 2.9×10-5, and an emphasis on the air-filling coefficient is found in the conventional photonic crystal fiber. The temperature dependence of the effective index for the infiltrated photonic crystal fiber is found to be dn/dT = -4.5×10-4 /°C. Also, large mode area photonic crystal fibers are shown to provide single mode guidance when symmetry free cladding is applied.
