Translational Control: Finding a low cost alternative to translational stage precision
Abstract
This article aims to outline and evaluate a low cost stage designed for sub-millimetre control. The components which comprise this device are targeted to the common consumer and are easily accessible by the general public. At a cost less than 60 CAD this device aims to bridge the gap between rough movements by hand and the sub-micron precision of expensive micro-steppers. In testing, the device prototype performed with sub-millimetre precision. Through a series of 100 distance measurement trials, the device performed movements to an accuracy within 0.05 mm with a standard deviation of approximately 0.0194. Further improvements to the system are also outlined.
