Abstract

This paper discusses different forms of optical temperature measurement: Microfiber loop Resonators,  semiconductor transmission spectrums, fluorescent lifetime measurements,  displacement sensors, Stimulated Brillouin scattering and cladding refractive index temperature dependence. It was found that the optical temperature measurement is effective for measuring systems in hostile environments, Time-critical processes, over distances up to 100 kilometres and possessed high-precision.  Its downfall is its cost compared to electronic bass temperature sensors.  Overall temperature sensors are an effective way of monitoring some of the critical or more challenging systems of the 21st Century.
