As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Welcome to the Global Health: Annual Review (GHAR)!

GHAR is a student-led journal showcasing research in the field of global health. Please carefully read the following submission information if you are interested in submitting to the journal.

Who can submit?

You are invited to submit research conducted for undergraduate thesis and senior projects; graduate student scholarly papers, practicums and theses; and research projects conducted by global health practitioners and academics. Opinion editorials (Op-Ed) are also welcome. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this please do not hesitate to contact the Editorial Team at mcmasterghar@gmail.com.

Please note that GHAR uses a peer-review system, however, does not impose the same restrictions as large peer-reviewed journals. This means that you can submit your article to GHAR, and also submit it to a peer-reviewed journal in the future.

What can be submitted?

Prose

We will be accepting four types of prose that are 700 to 1,200 words long and in Vancouver referencing style: research articles, opinion editorials, reflective narratives and art-based submissions. The four types of written submissions are described below:

Research Article: structure contains an introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion, as applicable to your evidence-informed paper.

Opinion Editorial: a written evidence-informed piece expressing the author’s thoughts on an area of global health that they have expertise or experience in.

Reflective Narrative: a critical reflective piece rooted in story-telling to share the author’s experiences; to highlight diverse perspectives in global health that may not fit within the scope of research articles and opinion editorials.

Art-based submissions: these are pieces that allow the authors to express themselves creatively. These submissions can be (but are not limited to): photographs, illustrations or paintings (hand made and/or digital), poetry, prose, infographics, digital visualizations, photo essays, short stories, and beadings. The goal is to foster artistic expression and provide a platform for authors to share their insights on global health through art. There is no specific template for the arts-based submissions, however we ask that a short text description of the art piece is submitted to accompany your work for our reviewers to better understand the relevance and purpose of the piece in the context of global health.

Case Report/Study: a case report or case study is a detailed examination focused on exploring the causes of ill health, social determinants of health, and challenges in accessing healthcare services. It emphasizes the impact of local and national issues on health and wellbeing, and the difficulties in providing care to vulnerable populations or in contexts with limited resources. Through a comprehensive analysis of individual, group, event, or public health interventions, case studies contribute valuable insights into global health, offering lessons to inform future practice and research

Your submission should fall into one of the following broad categories:

Colonialism in Global Health; Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases; Economics and Health Financing; Environmental Health and Climate Change; Ethics; Globalization; Governance; Health Equity; Health Policy and Systems; Indigenous Health; Innovation; Intersectional Identities (e.g., Gender, Race, Ability); Mental Health; Migration; Nutrition; One Health; Politics of Global Health; Poverty; Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Adolescent, and Child Health; Social Determinants of Health; Social Justice and Human Rights; War and Conflict. 

*Other topics not included in this list are welcomed for submission and up for review.

 

How many submissions can I make?

Applicants may submit one entry for review into each category: research article, opinion editorial, and reflective narrative. That is, you may submit one research article, one opinion editorial, and one reflective narrative, but not more than one in each category. If you submit more than one entry into each category, then only the first submission will be reviewed for publication.

 

When are submissions due?

The deadline for submissions for Issue 8 (2023) of GHAR is March 31, 2023 at 11:59pm EST. 
 
 

How do I submit?

Please submit via the online journal system. Submissions will be evaluated on originality, relevance to global health, clarity, and scholarship.
