Submission Types and Guidelines

Welcome to the Global Health Annual Review (GHAR)!

GHAR is a student-led journal showcasing research in the field of global health. Please carefully read the following submission information if you are interested in submitting to the journal.

Who can submit?

You are invited to submit if you are a graduate student completing your degree in global health or in public health, with a global health focus. You may also submit if you are student completing a different degree but your work is relevant to the global health topics addressed in the next section. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this please do not hesitate to contact the Editorial Team at mcmasterghar@mcmaster.ca.

Please note that GHAR is not a peer-reviewed journal and therefore you are not bound by the same restrictions as a peer-reviewed journal. This means that you can submit your article to GHAR, and also submit it to a peer-reviewed journal in the future.

What can be submitted?

Prose

We will be accepting two types of prose that are 700 to 1,200 words long and in Vancouver referencing style: research articles and opinion editorials. The two types of written submissions are described below:

Research Article: structure contains an introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion, as applicable to your paper.

Opinion Editorial: a 1,000 word written piece expressing the authour’s thoughts on an area of global health that they have expertise or experience in.

Please note: Submissions that do not comply to the template will not be reviewed for publication. Click on the ‘Research Article’ and ‘Opinion Editorial’ headings to access the templates. See Submission Preparation Checklist for link to submission templates.

All submissions should follow Vancouver style referencing. For referencing guide see http://guides.lib.monash.edu/c.php?g=219786&p=1453285

Your submission should fall into one of the following broad categories. Please indicate which category you believe your article falls in as per the template.

  • Communicable Diseases
  • Non-Communicable Disease
  • Gender
  • Poverty
  • Nutrition
  • War/Migration
  • Business/Globalization
  • Innovations/Interventions
  • Ethics

How many submissions can I make?

Applicants may submit one entry for review into each category: research article and opinion editorial. That is, you may submit one research article and one opinion editorial but not more than one in each category. If you submit more than one entry into each category, then only the first submission will be reviewed for publication.

When are submissions due?

Submissions for the research articles and opinion editorials are due by September 15th, 2017.

How do I submit?

Please submit via the online journal system. The editorial board will contact you within 10 business days if your submission is selected for publication. Only those that are selected will be contacted. Submissions will be evaluated on originality, relevance to global health, clarity, timeliness, and scholarship.

Thank you for applying to GHAR, we look forward to reading your submissions!

Sincerely,

The Editorial Board
