The Globalization of Medical Education: Bringing the Canadian Professional Competencies Program and Problem-Based Learning to the Indian Medical Education System

Abstract

This paper serves as the academic reasoning behind the decision to adjust and translate the McMaster University “Professional Competencies MD Program” into an applicable and useful course for Indian medical students. It does this by addressing the globalization of medical education by looking at the advent of programs that train medical students in professional and clinical competencies, the applicability of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) worldwide and the significance of cultural competency in adapting these programs. This paper provides the research and rationale behind the decisions made in appropriating content to the Indian cultural context through both a literature review and an experiential case discussion, which demonstrates exactly how the ProComp program is being modified to fit the context of Indian medical education system. Ultimately, this paper assesses the transition of the McMaster University Professional Competencies MD Program into the Indian medical school context.
