Abstract

This expository scholarly paper will focus on the issue of obesity, specifically in Canada. The prevalence of obesity in Canada has significantly increased over the last two decades and is caused by a number of factors which need to be identified to curtail the issue. This paper will explore the physiology and cellular biology with respect to obesity as well as the influence of the neuroendocrine system to understand the micro-scale mechanisms leading to obesity. The burden of obesity and its impacts on health and economy will also be examined. Finally, a policy analysis, utilizing the 3-I Framework, will be undertaken with the goal to assess the influences and contributors to a national obesity policy in Canada. In order to target the problem of obesity, the upstream determinants need to be approached with a preventative and proactive approach required. The objective of this paper will consolidate information regarding obesity and provide analysis regarding policies to combat the issue.
